I love this truly Canadian long weekend. I’m only a recent official resident of this country, but last year, I finally became a citizen, something I’m immensely proud of. Of all the holidays, this one feels the most uniquely Canadian to me: a weekend dedicated to a Queen’s birthday. It sounds very exotic. I’ve learned over time that for many, not all, Queen Victoria was a special and interesting woman. Mother to many children, not necessarily the warmest mother, but nevertheless, she was iconic in her influence of style, of family, morality and respectability. Over 64 years of her reign, she grew Britain to a global power and defined the modern monarchy.
